Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra to Celebrate Canada and Mexico Through 2026 Years of Culture

Doha: The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) is set to celebrate the musical traditions of Mexico and Canada with two special concerts in Doha as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture. 

The concerts will introduce audiences in Qatar to orchestral works closely connected to the cultural identities and musical histories of the two countries.

‘Sounds of Mexico’ to Open Concert Series

The programme will begin with Sounds of Mexico on September 18, led by internationally acclaimed Mexican conductor Enrique Arturo Diemecke.

The concert will be presented in connection with Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations, giving audiences in Doha an opportunity to discover the country through its orchestral music and cultural heritage. 

Diemecke is returning to Qatar after conducting the QPO in September 2025 for A Musical Encounter: Sounds of Qatar and Argentina. He later led more than 70 QPO musicians during the orchestra’s debut at the renowned Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, held as part of the Qatar, Argentina and Chile 2025 Year of Culture. 

Canada Takes Centre Stage in November

The second concert, Sounds of Canada, will take place on November 7 under conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe.

Born in the Czech Republic and raised and educated in Canada, Olivieri-Munroe’s international career reflects themes of migration and cultural exchange that have also helped shape Canadian classical music. 

Both concerts will be staged at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). 

Music as a Bridge Between Cultures

QPO Executive Director Kurt Meister said music offers audiences an immediate and emotional way to experience other cultures.

He explained that the two concerts will introduce audiences in Qatar to compositions they may not often hear while providing an opportunity to discover the composers, traditions and stories associated with Canada and Mexico. 

Part of the 2026 Years of Culture Programme

The concerts form part of the wider Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, a year-long initiative connecting the three countries through cultural and community programmes.

Activities throughout the year span areas including exhibitions, design, film, sport, heritage, education and community exchange, with the QPO concerts adding classical music to the programme.
