Qatar launches sports scholarship programme for student athletes

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has held an introduction meeting for gifted students registered through the government scholarship programme in sports — organised by the ministry's Higher Education Sector. In coordination with the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the event aimed to clarify programme objectives, targeted groups, and method of application for students, parents as well as authorities.

It supports skilled athletes to further their studies whilst pursuing their sporting careers. The programme aims to help develop a new generation of home-grown national talent that combines academic success with athletic achievement, who will be able to represent Qatar on the world stage and assist in achieving long term development goals for the country.

Supporting Academic and Athletic Excellence

The sports track aims to create a learning environment where students can pursue university education alongside professional sports training. Another way to maintain the Game and Education balance as scholarships are available within Qatar's Institutes of Higher Education through various disciplines for players who wish to keep competing whilst they complete a degree.

Key eligibility requirements include:

• The Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Qatar Olympic Committee

• General eligibility of the Government Scholarship Program.

• Getting an unconditional admission into a university approved for the internal scholarship programme.

• Sticking to the professional sports plan for the duration of your varsity career.

Scholarship Benefits and Application Timeline

At the meeting, authorities stressed the advantages of the programme, such as financial cover for tuition fees in eligible private universities, co-ordination with sports authorities and opportunities for scholarships to work in linewith regulations approved by authorities afterwards.

Programme benefits include:

• Tuition fee payment at accredited private schools

• Ongoing support from appropriate sporting bodies.

• Career opportunities following graduation.

• Advising through the academic and athletic process.

In a separate announcement, the Ministry said that applications for sports track during the same round of public university admissions will begin via the government scholarship platform (GSP) from November 15 until December 30 this year. They also took questions from students and parents, answering specific inquiries about the registration process as well.

The introduction of the sports track was confirmed by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education as being part of Qatar's commitment to nurturing promising national talent and promoting cooperation between education and sport.
