Qatar achieved a significant milestone on its path to become the first quantum-safe hermetic national critical infrastructure with the establishment of its first quantum-safe communications link. Ooredoo Qatar, Hamad Bin Khalifa University and the Ministry of Defence worked collaboratively to make the initiative possible.
This is a significant step in the nation's efforts to prepare critical national infrastructure against future threats from quantum computers and particles with advanced encryption technology.
What is Quantum-Safe Communication?
Quantum Key Distributing (QKD ) — an advanced form of cybersecurity based on the principles of quantum mechanics, has powered the new communications tie-up.
However, QKD immediately reveals if intercepting or tampering of transmitted data has taken place, leading to substantially more secure communications than traditional encryption methods.
Key Benefits of Quantum Key Distribution
Detects interception attempts instantly
Provides highly secure encryption keys
Protects sensitive communications from cyberattacks
Aids in protecting important infrastructure and government systems.
Ready for a quantum computing threat that aims to take you out in the future
Addressing Future Cybersecurity Risks
The move comes as escalating threats — like "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks — are raising alarms among security experts.
In these types of attacks, the cybercriminal collects data encrypted today because they are betting that one day quantum computers would be able to break today's encryption.
With these Quantum Safe technologies in place, Qatar is poised to protect sensitive information well into the future.
Collaboration Driving Innovation
The quantum-safe link was implemented and validated in Ooredoo Qatar's operational telecommunications network. This project was built in collaboration with:
-
Ooredoo Qatar
-
Qatar Center for Quantum Computing, Hamad Bin Khalifa University
-
Ministry of Defence
-
Quantum cybersecurity company ID Quantique
Looking Ahead
As stated by the partners of the project, it helped successfully set up a basis for scaling quantum-safe connectivity across more geolocations and domains.
Potential future applications include:
Government services
Financial institutions
Critical infrastructure networks
National telecommunications systems
As the world faces rising cyber threats, Qatar has taken a lead in pioneering next-generation cybersecurity innovation in the region with the development of its first quantum-safe communications link.
