Qatar Elected for Arab Renewable Energy Commission's Presidency

The Arab Renewable Energy Commission (AREC) elected the State of Qatar as its president for a term of four years, following the virtual meeting of the 11th AREC Executive Office.

HE President of General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) Eng. Issa bin Hilal Al Kuwari received the AREC presidency from HE Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of the sisterly Kingdom of Morocco Leila Benali.

Upon assuming the presidency, Eng. Al Kuwari valued Benali's dedication to the success of the noble mission of the Commission. He also thanked the sisterly Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for the great efforts it made to establish the AREC, commending the great work accomplished by all the experts, administrators, and specialists to raise the levels of cooperation and joint action between the brotherly Arab countries in a vital and important issue at the regional and international level.

Al Kuwari expressed honor that the State of Qatar assumed the presidency of the AREC, underling that it will make all possible efforts to advance AREC's work and its stature to become an important source of sincere Arab efforts in research and development in all fields of renewable energy.

Al Kuwari also affirmed Qatar's commitment to achieving sustainability goals and intensifying efforts to deal with the grave environmental challenges facing the world today, pointing out that Qatar is proud to host the first-ever carbon-neutral edition of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as part of efforts to make Doha the capital of carbon neutrality in the world in the future.

The aforementioned meeting discussed a number of issues related to the AREC work and reviewed the financial, administrative and technical reports of its various activities and projects in 2021.

The meeting also touched on the achievements made in terms of cooperation and understanding agreements concluded with various regional and international parties concerned with issues of sustainability and renewable energy. It also approved the project to publish a book on sustainable development and renewable energy, to be a comprehensive guide for Arab countries on the path to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality in 2050.

Established in 2010, AREC is an Arab institution that works to provide theoretical and practical contributions in helping Arab countries change their energy orientations, whether by spreading awareness and culture, or by transferring knowledge of renewable energy technology and energy efficiency to Arab countries and localizing them appropriately to achieve energy sovereignty and self-sufficiency for all member states.
