Qatar Calendar House confirms June 15 as start of Hijri year 1448

The Qatar Calendar House (QCH) has announced that Tuesday, June 15, 2026, will mark the first of Muharram and the start of the Hijri year 1448 AH, based on precise astronomical calculations. The statement emphasized that the determination of Islamic months is guided by the movement of the Moon around the Earth, while the Gregorian calendar is linked to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

Providing further detail, Dr. Faisal Al Ansari, Executive Director of QCH, explained that the crescent of Muharram will be born on Monday, June 14, at 5:55 a.m. Doha local time (2:55 a.m. GMT). He noted that the crescent will remain visible after sunset on the same day, with a duration of approximately 40 minutes over Qatar, gradually increasing in visibility further west.

Officials highlighted that these calculations are part of QCH’s ongoing efforts to provide accurate astronomical data to the public, ensuring clarity in determining the beginnings and endings of Hijri months. The announcement also reflects Qatar’s commitment to aligning religious observances with scientific precision, while maintaining the traditions of Islamic timekeeping.

The confirmation of Muharram’s start signals the arrival of the Hijri New Year, a significant occasion in the Islamic calendar. QCH reiterated that its forecasts are based on internationally recognized astronomical standards, reinforcing its role as a trusted authority in the region.
