The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has highlighted Qatar's impressive journey in the Asian Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, marking the first time the prestigious tournament will be hosted in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Scheduled to take place from 27 August to 12 September 2027, the tournament will see Qatar compete on home soil after successfully advancing to the second and final qualification stage.

Qatar finished among the top teams in the preliminary stage, earning qualification with a strong campaign.

  • Lebanon – 11 points (1st)

  • Japan – 10 points (2nd)

  • Qatar – 10 points (3rd)

  • Korea – 9 points

  • China – 9 points

  • Saudi Arabia – 9 points


Despite already qualifying automatically as tournament hosts, Qatar continued competing in the qualifiers to gain valuable international experience and improve the team's competitive level ahead of the World Cup.

Following the preliminary stage, the qualification groups have been merged for the final round.

  • Lebanon – 11 points

  • Japan – 10 points

  • Qatar – 10 points

  • Korea – 9 points

  • China – 9 points

  • Saudi Arabia – 9 points

 

Each team will play only the opponents carried over from the other merged group on a home-and-away basis.

Road to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027


Under FIBA's qualification format:

 

  • Top three teams from each final qualification group qualify directly.

  • The two fourth-placed teams will compete for the final qualification spot.

  • A total of seven teams will qualify through the Asian Qualifiers, alongside host nation Qatar.

  • The qualification tournament consists of 92 matches, with the World Cup officially beginning on 27 August 2027 and concluding with the final at Lusail Arena on 12 September 2027.

The Local Organizing Committee has confirmed the four venues that will host the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.
