Eight main bus stations and four major bus depots spread all over Doha and on its outskirts are in the pipeline, designed in accordance with the highest global safety and environment standards.

Qatar’s public transport sector with its Buildings Projects Department is set to undergo a major facelift in the coming months, under a program by the Ashghal - the Public Works Authority

Ashghal’s Buildings Projects Department in co-ordination with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC), is working on eight main bus stations in West Bay, Msheireb, Industrial Area, Al Soudan, Al Gharafa, Education City, Al Wakra and Lusail. Also in the works are four major bus depots at Lusail, Al Rayyan, Industrial Area and Al Wakra.

According to Ashghal, all the major works underway at the mentioned places are being designed in accordance with the highest global safety and environment standards - Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). Furthermore, all the bus depots and stations have important design and operational methods in line with three-star environmental quality planned for energy saving and environmental conservation.

The bus depots at Lusail, Al Rayyan, Industrial Area and Al Wakra will have an area from 129,000 to 190,000 square meters and the bus stations an average capacity for accommodating 25 vehicles.

Ashghal has informed that the Al Rayyan bus depot will have a berth for about 380 buses and also house a maintenance workshop and cleaning facility. 

The Al Rayyan bus depot is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2022 and the Education City bus station will be done by the third quarter of 2021. The depot and station will serve Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

According to information received from Ashghal, the Public Works Authority is working on 2,700 bus stops on all major roads and is designed to serve thousands of passengers spread across several areas inorder to enable them have easy access to use the buses. 

All the GSAS approved bus stops will have air-conditioned cabins, and allow passengers to wait in comfort inside the shaded enclosure and protect them from direct sunlight and humidity, especially in the hot summer months.

As part of its public bus infrastructure program, Ashghal had last year alone, signed 11 new contracts worth QR2bn with various local companies for building bus stations and depots.
