Only 80 miles: Qatar Airways flies world’s shortest Airbus A350 service

Qatar Airways briefly operated what schedule data indicates is the world’s shortest bookable Airbus A350 service in 2026, deploying its 283-seat A350-900 on the short international hop between Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Bahrain International Airport (BAH) on August 12 and 13.

The sector covers just 80 nautical miles — about 92 statute miles, or 148 kilometres — each way as a great-circle distance, though the actual flight path is longer once departure, arrival, and air-traffic routing are taken into account. The airline scheduled one A350-900 round trip on each of the two days, a temporary capacity adjustment on a route it normally serves with smaller aircraft.

Why a widebody on such a short hop

The deployment is less unusual than it sounds. Qatar Airways was the launch customer of both the A350-900 and the larger A350-1000, and it regularly rosters widebody jets on short regional sectors to feed connecting traffic through its Doha hub. Repositioning an aircraft within the wider network, or covering a short-term capacity gap, can make such assignments practical even on a flight that lasts barely longer than the climb and descent.

How it compares

The two-day service edged out one of the carrier’s own routes to claim the title, and sits among the shortest widebody operations anywhere:

•    It overtook Doha–Dammam (122 nautical miles / 226 km) as Qatar Airways’ shortest-ever A350 operation.
•    The overall record for the shortest scheduled A350 service belongs to Ethiopian Airlines’ Geneva–Lyon leg, around 60 miles and flown as part of a longer route to Addis Ababa.
•    Corendon Dutch Airlines flies an even shorter A350 hop between Bonaire and Curaçao, but it is not bookable on its own, so it falls outside the ‘bookable’ comparison.

The experiment recalls Emirates’ use of the Airbus A380 on ultra-short Gulf routes, and offered passengers and aviation enthusiasts an uncommon chance to sample a modern long-haul widebody on one of the shortest international sectors in the region. With the A350 assignment limited to August 12 and 13, the record-setting service was a short-lived — but notable — feature of Qatar Airways’ 2026 timetable.
