Mumbai Airport Averts Disaster on Same Runway

How The Incident Unfolded

The trouble started around 10 PM on Tuesday night. Air India Express flight AIX1547 had just landed from Siliguri. It was still on the runway and had not cleared it yet. At nearly the same moment, another aircraft got clearance to take off. Air India flight AI816, bound for Delhi, began rolling down that same runway. AIX1547 flew a narrow-body Boeing 737 MAX 8. AI816 flew a wide-body Boeing 777-300ER. Air traffic control noticed the two planes were on a collision path. The controller quickly ordered the AI816 crew to abort takeoff. The crew stopped the takeoff run and returned safely to the bay. Disaster was avoided by a matter of seconds.

Air India confirmed the sequence of events in an official statement. The airline said flight AI816's crew stopped the takeoff run after receiving instructions from air traffic control. The aircraft returned to the bay without incident. Air India also said the plane would undergo standard safety inspections. The airline is arranging alternate travel plans for the affected passengers.

Investigation Now Underway

Aviation authorities have launched a joint investigation into the incident. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation is leading the review. Investigators want to determine exactly what went wrong. They will examine why AI816 got clearance while AIX1547 was still on the runway. This is not an isolated event for Air India this month. On June 24, an Air India plane and an IndiGo flight came close at Ahmedabad airport. The Air India aircraft made an unintended turn while taxiing to its bay. That incident is also under DGCA review right now. Both airlines said the planes kept safe separation throughout that event. Passenger safety was not compromised in that earlier case.

These back to back incidents have raised fresh concerns. Runway and taxiway coordination at India's busiest airports is under scrutiny again. This is not a new issue for Mumbai airport either. A similar runway incursion happened there in June 2024. That incident involved an IndiGo landing and an Air India takeoff on one runway. The air traffic controller involved was pulled from duty during that investigation.
