Kuwait's Air Defense Systems Intercept Hostile Drones

KUWAIT CITY -ย Kuwait's armed forces said Thursday that the country's air defense systems were responding to hostile drones, urging the public to follow safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities, as the Gulf state was again drawn into the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces said explosions heard across parts of the country were the result of air defense systems intercepting hostile drones. The military did not immediately provide details on the number of drones intercepted, their origin, or whether the incident had caused any casualties or damage.

Kuwait Condemns Iranian Attacks

Separately, Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it described as Iran's "continued aggression" against Kuwaiti territory, calling it a flagrant violation of the country's sovereignty. The ministry said Kuwait held Iran "fully responsible" for the attacks and their consequences, warning that continued strikes against Kuwait and other Gulf Cooperation Council states represented a dangerous escalation.

Iran has been launching missiles and drones targeting U.S. bases and facilities in several regional countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, in retaliation for repeated American strikes on Iranian territory. Kuwait finds itself pulled into the conflict in large part because it hosts key U.S. military installations, including Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem Air Base.

Days of Repeated Interceptions

Thursday's incident is the latest in a series of air defense activations in Kuwait over the past week and a half. On Tuesday, July 14, the Kuwaiti military said its air defenses were responding to hostile missile and drone threats, while an earlier statement on Monday, July 13, said air defense systems were engaging hostile aerial targets within Kuwaiti airspace.

In one of the most serious episodes, Kuwait's Ministry of Defence announced that its Air Defence Forces had intercepted and neutralised six hostile missiles and 33 weaponised drones launched against the country. Ministry of Defence spokesman Colonel Saud Al-Atwan said the escalation had targeted several vital and civilian installations, and that shrapnel fallout from the mid-air interceptions had landed across residential and industrial areas, causing some material damage. He added that a Kuwaiti Navy vessel had been targeted during the hostilities, wounding four service members who were evacuated for treatment and were reported in stable condition.

Officials have said Kuwait has intercepted multiple ballistic missiles and more than a dozen drones over the recent period without any fatalities, though debris from interceptions has caused limited damage, including to power infrastructure. Iranian retaliatory attacks have repeatedly targeted U.S. military facilities across the Gulf in recent days, prompting air defense activations not only in Kuwait but also in Bahrain, Qatar and other neighbouring states.
