TOKYO: Japan has successfully launched the Michibiki-7 navigation satellite aboard an H3 rocket, strengthening the country’s satellite positioning network and marking another important mission for its new flagship launch vehicle.
The rocket lifted off from the Yoshinobu Launch Complex at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Tanegashima Space Center at 4:23:31 a.m. Japan Standard Time on August 11. Its upper stage released Michibiki-7 into the planned orbit approximately 29 minutes after launch.
New satellite joins Japan’s QZSS network
Michibiki-7, also known as QZS-7, is part of Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System. QZSS works alongside the United States’ Global Positioning System to improve the availability and accuracy of navigation and timing services, particularly across Japan and the wider Asia-Oceania region.
The system uses satellites in geosynchronous and specially inclined orbits, helping spacecraft remain visible at high angles over Japan for extended periods. This can improve signal reception in mountainous areas and dense cities where buildings may obstruct satellites closer to the horizon.
Satellite-based positioning supports a wide range of everyday and strategic services, including smartphones, vehicle navigation, surveying, disaster response, logistics, agriculture and infrastructure management.
H3 rocket records ninth flight
The mission was the ninth flight of Japan’s two-stage H3 rocket, which was developed by JAXA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as the successor to the long-serving H-IIA vehicle. The H-IIA retired in 2025 after completing 50 missions.
The latest success is significant for the H3 programme following earlier setbacks, including the rocket’s unsuccessful debut in 2023 and the loss of the Michibiki-5 mission in December 2025. The vehicle returned to flight in June 2026 with a successful mission carrying six satellites.
Japan intends the H3 to provide a more competitive and flexible platform for government, scientific and commercial launches while supporting the country’s long-term access to space.
Building a more resilient navigation system
The expansion of QZSS is part of Japan’s effort to develop a more resilient regional positioning capability. The network is designed to complement GPS while increasing the availability of high-precision services and reducing the impact of signal gaps.
With Michibiki-7 successfully deployed, Japan has taken another step toward expanding the constellation. Longer-term plans call for an 11-satellite network, which would offer broader coverage and greater operational resilience across the region.
