Israeli Strikes Kill Eight in Gaza Overnight

Overnight Israeli strikes on Gaza hit multiple residential buildings and killed at least eight people, local authorities said Sunday, even as Hamas maintained it had agreed to the latest stage of a deal aimed at ending the war.

Gaza civil defense officials said the strikes came around midnight and struck several apartment blocks. In one attack in the central Gaza Strip, a man and his wife were killed and several others were wounded when an Israeli military helicopter hit an apartment, a civil defense spokesman said. An elderly man and a child were killed in a separate strike on an apartment west of Gaza City, while three people, including a child, were reported killed when a strike hit an apartment northwest of Khan Younis in the south of the territory. Two children were among the dead.

The overnight toll followed a similar count a day earlier. Authorities said eight other people had been killed on Saturday in strikes that also damaged a hospital's medical supplies and targeted a rooftop. According to Gaza's health ministry, a strike destroyed medicine warehouses attached to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, which officials described as a critical lifeline for the surrounding area.

A deal in the balance

The strikes came days after Hamas said on Friday that it had agreed to a plan championed by US President Donald Trump. The proposal includes provisions for the group to hand over its weapons and for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, which the United States has described as a breakthrough toward ending the fighting.

Israel has yet to comment officially on the agreement. A political source told AFP there would be “no withdrawal whatsoever” without what Israel calls Hamas's “genuine disarmament.” Hamas, for its part, has said it will place its weapons in storage only after Israel halts military operations and pulls back its forces, leaving the sequencing of any deal unresolved.

A fragile truce

A ceasefire has been technically in place since October 2025, but attacks have continued intermittently since then. Gaza's health ministry says more than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed in the period since the truce took hold. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the latest strikes.

Casualty figures in Gaza are reported by local civil defense and health authorities and cannot be independently verified. The humanitarian situation across the territory remains severe, with medical facilities, displacement and shortages of essential supplies continuing to strain relief efforts.
