India Imposes Phased Import Ban on 405 Defence Items to Boost Domestic Production

India has announced a phased restriction on the import of 405 strategically important defence items as part of a fresh drive to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on overseas suppliers.

The items form the Ministry of Defence's sixth Positive Indigenisation List and include sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components and raw materials used across fighter aircraft, helicopters, tanks, warships, missile systems and other military platforms.

405 Items to Be Sourced Domestically

The new list requires the identified items to be indigenised within specified timelines and subsequently procured from Indian industry. Of the 405 items, 389 are linked to Defence Public Sector Undertakings, while 16 are intended for the Indian Coast Guard.

Rs 3,070 Crore Opportunity for Indian Industry

The Ministry's latest indigenisation push is expected to generate business opportunities worth about Rs 3,070 crore for domestic manufacturers. The policy is intended to encourage Indian companies, including private-sector firms and smaller suppliers, to develop components and technologies that were previously sourced from abroad.

Major Military Platforms Covered

The list includes items associated with several important Indian military platforms and systems. Reporting on the notification highlights components connected with the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Utility Helicopter, T-90 tanks, warships and missile systems, among other equipment.

Part of India's Aatmanirbhar Defence Strategy

The Positive Indigenisation List programme forms part of India's broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy in defence. Rather than banning complete categories of foreign defence equipment immediately, the programme identifies specific products and components that domestic industry is expected to develop and supply by designated deadlines.

Thousands of Defence Items Already Indigenised

India has been expanding the use of its SRIJAN indigenisation portal to connect the armed forces and defence public-sector companies with domestic manufacturers. More than 33,000 items have reportedly been offered for indigenisation through the portal, with over 15,700 already successfully indigenised.

Reducing Dependence on Foreign Supply Chains

Developing more components within India could help the defence sector reduce exposure to international supply disruptions while improving local maintenance, repair and production capabilities. It may also create opportunities for Indian manufacturers to deepen expertise in aerospace, electronics, engineering, materials and other specialised defence technologies.

A Long-Term Manufacturing Push

The latest list adds to a series of measures designed to increase the share of domestically produced defence equipment. As the phased deadlines take effect, Indian suppliers will be expected to meet the technical, quality and delivery requirements needed for critical military platforms and systems.
