Gaborone: Qatar has reiterated its strong support for peace and stability in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during high level discussions held in Gaborone, Botswana. The reaffirmation came as regional and international partners met to review progress in efforts to end violence and strengthen political dialogue in the conflict affected region.
Qatari officials stressed that Doha remains committed to backing diplomatic initiatives, humanitarian assistance, and regional mechanisms aimed at de escalation and long term stability. They highlighted Qatarβs belief that sustainable peace in the DRC requires inclusive dialogue, regional cooperation, and robust support for civilian protection.
Support for Regional Mediation
During the talks, Qatar praised the role of regional organizations and African partners working to facilitate negotiations between the Congolese government and armed groups. Officials underscored the importance of coordinated international engagement to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
Commitment to Peacebuilding
Qatar reaffirmed its readiness to contribute to peacebuilding programmes, including support for displaced communities, development initiatives, and efforts to strengthen governance and security structures in eastern DRC.
Focus on Stability and Humanitarian Relief
The discussions in Gaborone also addressed the urgent need to expand humanitarian access, protect civilians, and reinforce regional security frameworks. Qatar emphasized that lasting peace in the DRC is essential for broader stability across Central and East Africa.
