Afghanistan cricket is mourning the death of former fast bowler Shapoor Zadran, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 38 after a prolonged illness. The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed his passing, noting that he had been receiving treatment at a hospital outside New Delhi for a rare immune‑system disorder.

Zadran, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Afghan cricket, played a crucial role in the country’s early rise on the international stage. His left‑arm pace and aggressive bowling style made him a key figure in Afghanistan’s formative years, helping the team establish credibility against established cricketing nations.

Between 2009 and 2020, Zadran represented Afghanistan in 44 One‑Day Internationals (ODIs) and 36 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He featured in four consecutive T20 World Cups from 2010 to 2016, claiming nine wickets across those tournaments. His performances were instrumental in Afghanistan’s journey from an emerging cricket nation to a recognized competitor in global tournaments.

The ACB expressed deep sorrow over his death, describing him as “one of the foundation‑laying figures of Afghan cricket whose dedication and commitment helped propel the national team onto the international stage.” Tributes have poured in from fans, teammates, and cricket officials, who praised his role in inspiring a new generation of Afghan players.

Zadran’s death, which came just a day before his 39th birthday, marks the loss of not only a talented cricketer but also a symbol of Afghanistan’s resilience and determination in the sporting world. His legacy endures as a reminder of the passion and perseverance that brought Afghan cricket to the global arena.
