Fire Breaks Out on Two Gas Vessels at Egypt’s Damietta Port, No Casualties Reported

A fire broke out aboard a regasification vessel and a gas storage vessel at Egypt’s Damietta Port on Wednesday, with authorities reporting no injuries or fatalities.

Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said emergency and rapid-response procedures were activated immediately after the incident was reported. Firefighting and security teams worked alongside relevant authorities to contain the blaze, which was brought under control.

Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi travelled to the site to oversee the emergency response and monitor firefighting and security operations. Authorities are continuing technical assessments to determine the impact of the incident and ensure that safety procedures are fully implemented.

Cause of fire remains unclear

Egyptian authorities have not yet publicly established the cause of the fire.

Maritime security firm Ambrey separately reported that a US-owned floating storage and regasification unit at the port had been struck, while Reuters reported that security and industry sources identified the affected vessel as Energos Winter. The fire reportedly spread to a second vessel, GasLog Salem. However, Egyptian authorities have not confirmed that the incident was caused by a drone strike.

No group has publicly claimed responsibility for an attack.

Damietta’s role in Egypt’s gas supply

Damietta Port is an important part of Egypt’s energy infrastructure and is home to one of the country’s two LNG liquefaction plants, with the other located at Idku.

Since 2025, the Mediterranean port has also become an important hub for floating storage and regasification vessels as Egypt increased LNG imports to strengthen domestic gas supplies, particularly during the summer months when electricity demand rises.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and increased attention on energy infrastructure across the Middle East.

Egyptian authorities said emergency and technical teams would continue working at the site and assessing the consequences of the incident. Officials have urged media outlets and social media users to rely on official statements for confirmed information as the assessment continues.
