The Syrian Ministry of Interior confirmed that 18 people, including four police officers, were injured in twin explosions that occurred Tuesday near the Ministry of Tourism in central Damascus.
According to the Ministry’s statement, Internal Security Forces detected two explosive devices during routine field operations. Specialized bomb disposal units were deployed to neutralize the devices, but both detonated during the defusing process, causing injuries among security personnel and civilians in the vicinity.
Officials emphasized that the blasts took place outside the designated security perimeter established for the residence of French President Emmanuel Macron, who was in Damascus on an official visit. The Ministry clarified that the explosions posed no direct threat to the French leader’s accommodation or to the visit itself.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area, launching clearance operations and conducting searches to ensure the safety of nearby residents and passersby. Preliminary investigations revealed that both devices were improvised explosive devices (IEDs). One had been concealed inside a vehicle parked along the roadside, while the other was hidden in a trash container.
The Ministry stressed that specialized teams continue to investigate the incident, focusing on identifying those responsible and preventing further threats. The attack highlights ongoing security challenges in Damascus, where authorities remain on high alert to safeguard public spaces and visiting dignitaries.
