Dubai Metro Blue Line Construction Progress and 2029 Opening Date

The Dubai Metro Blue Line is already under construction, and it is scheduled to open to passengers on 9 September 2029. As of 2026, the project is reported at 10% completion, with RTA targeting 30% by the end of 2026. 

How the Blue Line is being built

The project will cost more than AED 20.5 billion and cover 30 km:

• 15.5 km underground 
• 14.5 km above ground 
• 14 stations in total 
• 3 interchange stations 
• 7 elevated stations 
• 4 underground stations 

The route will connect the Green Line at Creek Station with the Red Line at Centrepoint, creating a major new link across eastern Dubai. It will serve areas including Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Ras Al Khor, International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Academic City, Mirdif and Al Warqa. 

What is happening on the ground now?

Construction began after the foundation stone was laid in June 2025. RTA says the project has already involved more than 500 engineers and global experts, 3,000 workers and over three million work hours. Contractors have also completed 260 deep foundations and implemented 11 traffic diversions. 

The major next phase is underground tunnelling. RTA launched the primary tunnelling works in June 2026. The underground sections are being constructed using specialised tunnel-boring equipment, while elevated sections require large-scale foundation, viaduct and station construction. 

What will it change?

The Blue Line is expected to serve areas with a combined population of around one million people by 2040 and provide a direct metro connection to Dubai International Airport in around 20 minutes from the areas it serves. RTA also expects it to help reduce traffic congestion on the relevant corridors by 20%. 

One of its standout features will be the Emaar Properties Iconic Station at Dubai Creek Harbour. At 74 metres high, it is planned to become the world's tallest metro station and is designed to accommodate around 160,000 passengers per day.
