Dubai has taken another major step toward launching commercial electric air taxis, with the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport near Dubai International Airport (DXB) now technically complete and subsequently receiving regulatory certification for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft operations.

Located beside one of the world’s busiest international airports, the facility will serve as the primary hub of Dubai’s planned Air Taxi network, which is being developed by Skyports Infrastructure in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Commercial air-taxi operations continue to be targeted for 2026.

World-First Facility Near Dubai International Airport

The purpose-built station reached technical completion in April 2026, confirming that its infrastructure was ready to accommodate electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

The facility was designed by global engineering consultancy GHD for Skyports Infrastructure as part of Dubai’s broader advanced air-mobility programme.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, reviewed the completed station and experienced a simulation of how future passengers will move through the facility.

Regulatory Certification Secured

The project passed another crucial milestone in July when the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) certified the facility for eVTOL operations.

Officially registered as VDX, it became the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport to receive such regulatory certification.

The GCAA assessment covered infrastructure, operational procedures, safety-management systems, emergency preparedness and compliance with applicable aviation requirements.

The approval moves Dubai closer to beginning passenger services once the remaining aircraft and operational requirements are completed.

Four-Level Vertiport Designed for Air Taxis

The DXB vertiport occupies approximately 3,100 square metres across four levels.

Its infrastructure includes:

•   Ā Two dedicated take-off and landing pads
•   Ā Passenger processing and waiting areas
•   Ā Security facilities
•   Ā Electric aircraft charging infrastructure
•   Ā Two levels of vehicle parking
•   Ā Fully air-conditioned passenger facilities
•   Ā Integration with Dubai’s wider transport network

The site is expected to handle up to 170,000 passengers annually once fully operational.

Four Air Taxi Stations Planned Across Dubai

The DXB facility will be the first and principal station in Dubai’s initial air-taxi network.

Three additional vertiports are being developed for major areas of the city, with the initial network planned to cover:

Dubai International Airport
Downtown Dubai
Dubai Marina
Palm Jumeirah

The stations are intended to integrate air taxis with Dubai Metro, road transport and other public-transport services, allowing passengers to move between different modes more easily.

DXB to Palm Jumeirah in Around 10 Minutes

One of the biggest attractions of Dubai’s planned air-taxi service will be significantly shorter journey times.

RTA estimates that an air-taxi flight between Dubai International Airport and Palm Jumeirah could take about 10 minutes, compared with approximately 45 minutes by car under typical conditions.

The aircraft selected for the service is being developed by Joby Aviation.

Joby’s electric aircraft is designed to carry four passengers plus a pilot and can travel at speeds of up to approximately 321 kilometres per hour, with a maximum range of around 161 kilometres according to RTA project specifications.

Electric Aircraft Designed for Urban Travel

Unlike conventional helicopters, the Joby aircraft uses electric propulsion and is designed specifically for short urban journeys.

The eVTOL aircraft takes off vertically before transitioning into forward flight, allowing it to operate without conventional airport runways.

Electric propulsion is also expected to produce considerably lower operating noise than traditional helicopters, an important consideration for flights over densely populated urban areas.

Dubai aims to use the technology as another component of its wider smart and sustainable transport network.

Dubai Already Completed Historic Crewed Air Taxi Flight

Dubai’s air-taxi ambitions have already moved beyond conceptual demonstrations.

In November 2025, RTA and Joby Aviation completed the first crewed electric air-taxi flight between two separate locations in the UAE.

The Joby aircraft flew from the company’s test facility in Margham to Al Maktoum International Airport, completing the journey in approximately 17 minutes.

The test represented an important step in validating the aircraft in the UAE’s operating environment ahead of commercial services.

Passenger Experience Designed to Be Fast

The DXB vertiport has been developed with a streamlined passenger journey in mind.

According to details revealed during a media tour of the facility, the passenger process from arriving at the vertiport to reaching the airside area could take about 10 minutes.

Security screening, passenger processing and aircraft boarding are being designed around the short-distance nature of urban air travel.

The goal is to make an air-taxi journey function more like an integrated public-transport experience than a traditional airport departure.

Part of Dubai’s Wider Future Mobility Strategy

Dubai has invested heavily in expanding transport choices beyond conventional roads.

The emirate’s network already combines:

  • Dubai Metro
  • Dubai Tram
  • Public buses
  • Taxis
  • Cycling infrastructure
  • Autonomous mobility trials
  • Future electric air taxis

Sheikh Hamdan said the completion of the first air-taxi station represents a strategic step toward developing an integrated, multi-level transport ecosystem based on advanced technology.

The programme supports Dubai’s ambition to become a global testing ground for next-generation urban mobility.

What Happens Next?

While construction and certification of the DXB vertiport represent major milestones, commercial passenger operations still depend on the completion of wider regulatory and operational preparations.

Additional vertiports are being developed, while Joby Aviation continues working toward the approvals required for commercial aircraft operations.

Dubai continues to target the launch of its first commercial air-taxi services during 2026.

Once operational, the service could change how passengers travel between Dubai International Airport and some of the emirate’s busiest districts.
