Cineteca Nacional de las Artes hosted a major Arab film showcase this month. The Doha Film Institute curated seven films for the screening series. These films previously won awards at Cannes, Venice, and Thessaloniki. The event formed part of the 2026 Year of Culture between Mexico and Qatar. More than 1,000 people attended the screenings across the program. This turnout marked an exceptional response for the Mexican venue.

Stories from across the Arab world

The lineup featured films from Iraq, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Egypt. Each film explored identity, memory, family, or tradition in depth. Mexican audiences rarely get access to these kinds of stories. The selection offered a window into perspectives missing from local screens.

A partnership built on rare access

Nelson Carro directs outreach and programming at Cineteca Nacional de las Artes. He said the Doha Film Institute partnership gives Mexico rare access to Arab films. His team usually works with European distributors for international content. Direct access to Arab cinema remains uncommon without partnerships like this one. Carro said the curated program touched on themes that resonate everywhere. He called this relationship worth strengthening and expanding further.

Culture and sport working together

Mohammed Al Kuwari advises on Latin America for the Years of Culture program. He said lasting partnerships grow through real people to people connection. Film helps carry stories across borders and cultures effectively. Al Kuwari linked this summer program to the ongoing World Cup 2026. He said culture and sport together build long term connections between societies. This film series fits into a larger Mexico City program this summer. Partners include Museo Jumex and the Centro de Cultura Digital. The full program spans film, art, heritage, design, and sport through 2026.
