A powerful heatwave is sweeping across Central Europe, pushing temperatures above 40°C in several countries and prompting health alerts, wildfire warnings and emergency measures as millions brace for extreme conditions. Luxembourg is also preparing for scorching weather, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 35°C on Monday.
Meteorologists say the hottest conditions are being recorded across parts of France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and the Balkans, where daytime temperatures are expected to range between 38°C and 41°C. Authorities have urged residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activity, stay hydrated and take extra precautions to protect vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children and people with chronic illnesses.
Luxembourg will experience a gradual rise in temperatures over the weekend before peaking between 33°C and 35°C on Monday. The national weather service expects slightly cooler conditions from Tuesday, with highs easing to around 29–31°C, while isolated showers could provide some relief early in the week.
The prolonged heat has heightened concerns over wildfire risks across southern and western Europe. Firefighters in several countries remain on high alert as dry vegetation, strong winds and soaring temperatures create ideal conditions for fast-moving blazes. Recent wildfires have already forced evacuations in parts of France, Spain and Greece.
Health authorities across the region have advised people to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day, drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and regularly check on elderly relatives and neighbours. Cities are also opening cooling centres and increasing public awareness campaigns to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Climate experts note that Europe has experienced a series of increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves in recent years, a trend linked to global climate change. The latest spell marks another period of exceptionally hot weather affecting large parts of the continent during the summer of 2026.
