Los Angeles: Brad Pitt has revealed that he has started drinking again after about seven years of sobriety, saying he has adopted a more restrained approach in a new interview.
Speaking to Esquire for its September cover story, the 62-year-old actor said, “I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon,” adding that he has since taken a more measured approach to drinking.
Pitt said he had grown “overconfident a couple times” before settling into moderation. “I can have a few,” he said. “But I can't have a lot. I have to be professional about it.” The subject came up after the actor offered the interviewer a glass of wine at the start of their conversation.
The F1 and Fight Club star first gave up alcohol in 2016, following his separation from ex-wife Angelina Jolie. He has spoken candidly about his recovery in the years since, telling The New York Times in 2019 that he had spent around 18 months attending an all-male Alcoholics Anonymous group, which he described as a freeing and largely non-judgmental space.
In 2020, while accepting the Best Supporting Actor award for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the National Board of Review gala, Pitt publicly credited fellow actor Bradley Cooper with helping him through his recovery.
The remarks come as Pitt prepares for a busy period on screen, including his reported return as stuntman Cliff Booth in the upcoming Netflix film The Adventures of Cliff Booth, directed by David Fincher and written by Quentin Tarantino.
