Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was born on June 3, 1980, in Doha. He is the fourth son of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. His mother, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, remains a respected public figure today. Nobody could have predicted just how far this quiet boy would rise.
A Childhood Shaped By Discipline And Distance
Tamim spent his early years in Qatar before moving to England for school. He attended Sherborne School in Dorset, then switched to Harrow School. He completed his A Levels in 1997 and moved straight into military training. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst shaped his discipline and worldview early on.
He graduated in 1998 and joined Qatar's armed forces as a second lieutenant. This grounding in structure and service stayed with him for the rest of his life.
Becoming The Chosen Heir
Tamim was not first in line to rule Qatar. His older brother, Sheikh Jassim, held that position for years. Jassim stepped aside in 2003, opening the path for Tamim. He became heir apparent on August 5, 2003, at just 23 years old. For the next decade, he quietly built experience across security and economic roles.
The Good Work That Defined His Rise
Long before becoming Emir, Tamim focused heavily on sport and global visibility. In 2005, he founded Qatar Sports Investments, which later purchased Paris Saint Germain. In 2006, he chaired the Asian Games committee, bringing every member nation to Doha for the first time ever. His biggest triumph came when Qatar won the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

On June 25, 2013, his father made history by voluntarily handing him power. Tamim became Emir at just 33 years old, a rare peaceful transition in Gulf politics.
Once in charge, Tamim moved fast. He built the Doha Metro system and completed Hamad International Airport. He grew the Qatar Investment Authority into one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds. That fund now holds major stakes in Barclays, Sainsbury's, and even The Shard in London.
He also became a trusted global mediator. Qatar hosted peace talks between the US and the Taliban. It helped negotiate hostage releases during the Israel Hamas conflict. World leaders repeatedly thanked him for his calm, steady diplomacy on the world stage.
He steered Qatar through a brutal 43 month blockade from neighboring countries starting in 2017. Rather than panic, he built new trade routes through Turkey, Iran, and Oman. The blockade finally ended in January 2021, and Qatar emerged stronger than before.
Then Came A Deeply Personal Loss
On July 12, 2026, Tamim's father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, passed away at 74. The Amiri Diwan confirmed the news that Sunday, plunging the nation into mourning. Qatar declared four days of national mourning across all government institutions.
For Tamim, this was more than a national event. It was the loss of the father who once handed him an entire country to lead. He had to grieve privately while carrying enormous public responsibility at the same time.
How Qatar And The World Showed Up For Him

In the days that followed, crowds gathered at Lusail Palace to offer condolences directly to Tamim. Ruling family members, government ministers, and everyday citizens stood in long lines. Foreign dignitaries traveled from across the globe to stand beside him in person.
Rwanda's President Paul Kagame made the trip to Doha. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and Kazakhstan President Kassym Jomart Tokayev did the same. Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and Iraqi officials also came to pay respects.
US President Donald Trump personally called Tamim to offer his condolences. According to the Amiri Diwan, Tamim responded with deep and sincere gratitude. Leaders from Egypt, the UAE, and Sharjah sent their own heartfelt messages soon after.
A Nation That Never Left His Side
Throughout the mourning period, Tamim continued fulfilling his duties without stepping back. He greeted mourners personally rather than staying distant during this painful time. Citizens across Qatar shared memories of growing up under both his father's and his own leadership.
This outpouring of support did more than comfort a grieving son. It reaffirmed something Qataris already believed. Their Emir was never ruling from a distance. He has always stood among his people, and they stood right back with him when it mattered most.
A Story Still Being Written
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani went from a quiet boy in Doha to one of the most respected rulers in the Gulf. He built stadiums, brokered peace deals, and steered his nation through isolation. Then, in one of his hardest personal moments, an entire country and a watching world stood beside him. That kind of loyalty is not accidental. It is earned, and Tamim has spent over a decade earning it.
