Little Girl praying on the Christmas Eve Service
Bethlehem: For the first time in more than two years, Bethlehem celebrated Christmas with joy and festivity, marking a symbolic moment of resilience for communities scarred by the war in Gaza. Scouts marched proudly through the city’s streets, music filled Manger Square, and families gathered under the glow of a towering Christmas tree beside the Church of the Nativity.
The celebrations come after years of somber observances, which have been overshadowed by the conflict that began in October 2023. With a fragile ceasefire now holding, residents seized the opportunity to reclaim their traditions, viewing the festivities as a step toward healing and renewal.
Local voices reflected both the pain of survival and the hope of moving forward. “Today is full of joy because we haven’t been able to celebrate because of the war, said 17-year-old scout Milagros Anstas. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Jerusalem’s Latin Patriarch, echoed this sentiment, noting that even in Gaza he had witnessed “a disaster” but also “the desire of life”.
The return of Christmas in Bethlehem was not just a religious celebration but a declaration of resilience. Families, children, and visitors from abroad joined together, showing that even after years of hardship, the community remains determined to embrace peace and light. “This year we want a Christmas full of light because this is what we need after two years of darkness,” Cardinal Pizzaballa said before leading Midnight Mass.
Similar scenes unfolded in Damascus, where Christmas lights illuminated the Old City despite lingering fears of violence. “Syria deserves joy and for us to be happy, and to hope for a new future,” said student Loris Aasaf, reflecting the shared desire across the region to move beyond conflict.
Globally, Christmas Eve gatherings carried a message of unity, reminding communities that survival after war is not only about endurance but also about reclaiming life, hope, and peace.
