Beijing Named UNESCO World Capital of Architecture 2029

Paris: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has selected Beijing as the World Capital of Architecture 2029, recognising the Chinese capital for its successful integration of cultural heritage preservation, innovative urban planning, and sustainable city development.

UNESCO said Beijing was chosen under the joint UNESCO–International Union of Architects (UIA) programme for its ability to balance one of the world's richest architectural legacies with a forward-looking vision for modern, resilient, and people-centred urban development. The organisation highlighted the city's historic neighbourhoods, landmark conservation projects, and contemporary architectural achievements as examples of how heritage and innovation can coexist.

The designation means Beijing will host a year-long programme of cultural, educational, and professional events in 2029, showcasing architecture as a driver of sustainable development, social inclusion, and improved quality of urban life.

UNESCO noted that the World Capital of Architecture initiative aims to raise global awareness of the role architecture, urban planning, culture, and heritage play in creating sustainable and liveable cities. The title is awarded every three years to the city hosting the UIA World Congress of Architects, bringing together architects, urban planners, policymakers, academics, and industry leaders from around the world.

Beijing's selection reflects its extensive efforts to preserve historic landmarks while promoting environmentally responsible urban renewal, smart city initiatives, and community-focused public spaces. UNESCO said these achievements demonstrate how cities can successfully combine cultural identity with modern development to address future urban challenges.

Previous cities to hold the title include Rio de Janeiro (2020), Copenhagen (2023), and Barcelona (2026), each using the designation to promote dialogue on architecture, sustainability, and urban innovation. Beijing will become the next global platform for advancing discussions on the future of cities and the built environment.

The announcement reinforces UNESCO's commitment to encouraging architecture that supports inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban growth while celebrating cultural diversity and protecting the world's architectural heritage.
