Doha, October 26, 2026 : The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), in collaboration with healthcare sector partners, is marking Qatar Infection Prevention and Control Week from October 18 to 23 under the theme “Generations of Infection Prevention. Past. Present. Protected.”
The national initiative aims to raise awareness of infection prevention and control while strengthening practices that safeguard patients, healthcare workers and the wider community.
Coinciding with World Infection Prevention and Control Week, the campaign highlights the evolution of infection prevention, from the practices that established modern standards to today's evidence-based approaches, technological advances and innovations designed to improve healthcare safety.
As part of the programme, the MoPH, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), will hold a virtual seminar covering the history of infection prevention and control, Qatar's National Infection Control Programme and the role of innovation and technology in advancing preventive measures.
Healthcare facilities will also host awareness activities for medical professionals, patients, families, visitors and community members. The activities will focus on early identification of infection risks, outbreak preparedness and response, and the use of digital technologies and innovative solutions to strengthen prevention efforts.
Dr. Ameena Al Fakhro, Director of the Healthcare Quality Department at the MoPH, stressed that infection prevention and control remain essential to patient safety and the quality of healthcare services. She highlighted the responsibility of healthcare professionals in promoting safe practices and reducing infection risks, noting that effective prevention involves stopping infections before they occur, rather than focusing solely on managing cases.
She said this year's theme underlines the importance of building on accumulated experience, applying evidence-based practices and using modern technologies to improve prevention methods and identify risks at an early stage.
The observance also recognises healthcare pioneers whose contributions helped establish modern infection prevention and control, alongside the ongoing work of specialists and frontline healthcare staff. It highlights the importance of preparedness, data, surveillance and innovation in strengthening national prevention capabilities.
The MoPH has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign as part of the initiative, emphasising that infection prevention is a shared responsibility. The campaign encourages adherence to preventive measures and safe practices to limit the spread of infections and improve healthcare quality.
It also seeks to raise public awareness of progress in the field, from fundamental preventive practices to advanced surveillance systems and digital technologies. The initiative stresses that innovation and technology complement the expertise of healthcare professionals rather than replace it.
Qatar Infection Prevention and Control Week serves as an opportunity to recognise specialists and medical teams for their role in protecting patients, healthcare workers and communities, while supporting safer healthcare environments and improved service quality.
