Argylle: Movie Review.

Argylle is a 2024 spy action comedy film directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn and written by Jason Fuchs. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Henry Cavill, Sofia Boutella, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Spy novelist Elly Conway's life takes an unexpected turn when her fictional world collides with reality. Pursued by the malevolent Division, Elly, along with spy Aidan, uncovers shocking truths about her own identity. As Rachel Kylle, a brainwashed operative, Elly's suppressed memories are intricately woven into her novels, and a hidden 'Masterkey' becomes the focal point of their perilous journey.

Betrayals unfold as Elly confronts her estranged parents, who are revealed to be part of the division. The quest for the Masterkey leads them to Arabian adventures, where sparks of romance rekindle between Elly and Aidan. After decrypting the codes from a mysterious book, they discover the key's location.

However, the path to truth is riddled with obstacles. Ruth, Elly's mother, turns out to be a high-ranking Division member and shocking revelations about Rachel's loyalty and the murder of a hacker surface. A drugged encounter in Ritter's office seems to restore Rachel's memories, leading her to seemingly side with the Division against Aidan. Aidan's survival and Elly's internal struggle set the stage for a showdown. With unexpected allies, including a thought-to-be-dead friend, they outsmart the division, destroy their base, and publish Elly's last novel.

The story concludes with an enigmatic twist at Elly's book event, where an American man resembling her fictional character, Argylle, adds a final layer of mystery to her tumultuous journey.

In this lively spy comedy, directed by Matthew Vaughn, viewers are treated to a rollercoaster of nonsensical yet entertaining events. The film, reminiscent of Vaughn's Kingsman series, boasts a blend of action, humor, unpredictable alliances, and enemies. The stellar cast delivers mostly outstanding performances, complemented by remarkable set pieces and a well-curated soundtrack featuring Lorne Balfe's excellent score.

The ensemble cast revels in their roles, with Bryce Dallas Howard leading the way as novelist Elly Conway. While her performance is not subpar, some may argue a slight miscasting, suggesting that actresses like Emily Blunt or Karen Gillan might have brought a different dynamic to the main role. However, this remains a minor critique. Sam Rockwell offers his trademark slightly unhinged brilliance, Bryan Cranston excels as the growling villain, and Catherine O'Hara impresses in dual roles as a mother and astute scientist.

Sofia Boutella captivates in her unfortunately limited role, while Samuel L. Jackson maintains his characteristic coolness. The over-the-top performances of Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, and Ariana DeBose, portraying characters from Elly's sensationalistic novels, add a hilariously extravagant touch to the narrative. Not to be overlooked is Chip, the endearing and much-put-upon Alfie the Cat. Overall, Vaughn delivers a delightful and action-packed cinematic experience.
