Arab League Welcomes UK Decision to Ban Trade with Israeli Settlement Goods

Cairo, September 09, 2026 : The Arab League has welcomed the United Kingdom's decision to ban trade in goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements, along with the intention expressed by 12 friendly countries to take similar steps by imposing restrictions on trade in settlement goods considered illegal under international law.

Fahmy Calls Move a Step Toward Accountability

In a statement Wednesday, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy described the measures as a step in the right direction toward addressing the illegal Israeli settlement system, restoring an approach of accountability, and refusing to overlook the actions of the occupying government.

Concrete Measures Reflect Global Concern Over Settlements

Fahmy stressed that concrete and practical measures against the settlement system — which he said is aimed at undermining the two-state solution — reflect a growing recognition among nations of the seriousness of developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, including what he described as the apartheid regime established by the occupation and its enabling of settler violence against unarmed Palestinian civilians under government protection.

Call for More Countries to Join UK's Stance

The Arab League Secretary-General called on all countries that continue to uphold international law and the two-state solution as the only path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to join the position taken by the United Kingdom, as reflected in the joint statement issued by the 12 countries. He stressed that concrete measures against the settlement system would compel the occupation to reconsider the cost of its illegal practices, following years without meaningful accountability.
