Arab League Says Israeli Actions Are Undermining Regional De-escalation Efforts

CAIRO — The Arab League has strongly condemned continuing Israeli military actions in the Palestinian territories, southern Lebanon and Syria, saying the developments are undermining efforts to reduce tensions across the region.

Speaking during the 166th regular session of the Arab League Council at ministerial level in Cairo, Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy said the League viewed the attacks as violations of sovereignty and as a threat to regional de-escalation arrangements.

Fahmy also accused Israel of delaying implementation of commitments linked to the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit agreement, arguing that this was obstructing efforts to move from a ceasefire toward a more durable peace process.

Addressing the situation in Gaza, the Secretary-General said around 300 Palestinian children had been killed during nearly 300 days since the ceasefire. He also pointed to continuing violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem, including settlement expansion, land confiscations, home demolitions and incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Arab League said it would increase efforts to monitor and document what it describes as violations of international law and relevant international resolutions. A unified coordination mechanism is being launched to connect Arab monitoring bodies with departments of the League's General Secretariat.

According to the League, the mechanism is intended to standardize monitoring and documentation methods and produce periodic reports that can support political, media and legal action.

Fahmy also addressed wider regional tensions, saying the Arab League considered Iranian attacks on territories and facilities in Arab countries unacceptable. He stressed that Arab states were not parties to the conflict and should not become arenas for military confrontation or retaliation.

The remarks come as regional diplomatic efforts remain focused on preventing further escalation and preserving the sovereignty and security of Arab states amid continuing conflict in several parts of the Middle East.
