By comparison, OpenAI β maker of ChatGPT β was valued at $852 billion as recently as March 2026. Anthropic has now leapfrogged that figure by more than $100 billion, cementing its position as the world's most valuable AI startup. The round came together within weeks, driven by heavy inbound interest from investors who wanted to build stakes ahead of a widely anticipated public debut.
The company also disclosed that its annualised run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion earlier this month β a figure that has climbed at a pace that leaves most of Silicon Valley's growth stories behind.
Who Backed This Round
The Series H was co-led by four of Silicon Valley's most prominent venture capital firms: Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, each contributing more than $2 billion individually.
Additional institutional investors participating in the round include Baillie Gifford, Blackstone, Brookfield, D.E. Shaw Ventures, DST Global, Fidelity Management & Research, Capital Group, and Coatue, among others.
The round also incorporates $15 billion in previously committed investments from cloud infrastructure partners, including a $5 billion contribution from Amazon. Cloud giant Google has separately pledged up to $40 billion over time.
In a notable addition, three semiconductor manufacturers β Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix β participated as strategic infrastructure partners. Their chips are critical to running Anthropic's large-scale AI models, making their investment as much a supply-chain alignment as a financial one.
What the Money Is For
Anthropic's Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao explained the intent clearly: "This funding will help us serve the historic demand we are experiencing, stay at the research frontier, and bring Claude to more of the places where work happens."
That means three things in practice: scaling compute infrastructure to keep up with rapidly growing enterprise demand, continuing frontier AI research to stay competitive with OpenAI and Google DeepMind, and expanding Claude's reach across the platforms and tools businesses already use every day.
On that last front, Anthropic announced a significant milestone alongside the fundraise: Claude is now the first frontier AI model available across all three of the world's largest cloud platforms β Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. For enterprise customers, that kind of ubiquity matters enormously.
Claude's Rise: An Enterprise-First Strategy That Paid Off
Anthropic's ascent has not followed the same path as OpenAI. While ChatGPT built its early dominance through consumer adoption and viral social media moments, Anthropic made a deliberate choice to target enterprise and business clients first. That bet has paid off handsomely.
More than 300,000 businesses now use Claude tools, and the company has seen its large account numbers grow more than sevenfold in a single year. Clients include global names across finance, healthcare, technology, and professional services.
One product in particular β Claude Code, a tool for software development β has been a standout growth driver. It became generally available in May 2025, hit $1 billion in annualised revenue by November 2025, and reached $2.5 billion in annualised revenue by February 2026. Enterprise clients represent more than half of Claude Code's revenue, with customers including Netflix, Spotify, KPMG, L'OrΓ©al, and Salesforce.
The Safety-First Company That Refused to Compromise
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei and a group of former OpenAI employees who felt that the race to deploy AI was outpacing work on making it safe. That founding philosophy β safety as a core design principle, not an afterthought β remains central to everything the company does.
It is also, paradoxically, what got Anthropic into one of its most high-profile conflicts to date.
The company is currently locked in legal proceedings with the US Department of Defense after the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk β an unusual and controversial move that came after Anthropic refused to grant the military unrestricted access to its AI models. Contract proposals from the Pentagon reportedly included access to geolocation data, financial records, and browsing histories. Anthropic drew firm red lines: no mass surveillance, no autonomous lethal weapons. The company has called the designation unconstitutional retaliation and has filed suit against the Defense Department.
The dispute placed real pressure on Anthropic's enterprise relationships β every major company with defence-adjacent contracts suddenly had to ask whether using Claude created legal exposure. But rather than triggering a customer exodus, the controversy appears to have done the opposite. Public backlash pushed Claude to the top of Apple's App Store, and annualised revenue climbed rapidly through the period.
