Lalibela, Ethiopia 

Eleven medieval churches were carved directly downward into solid volcanic rock in the 12th and 13th centuries. Lalibela remains an active pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, especially during Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) and Timkat 9Epiphany), when thousands of white-robed pilgrims fill the churches.
