Akram Afif
In a thrilling match at Al Bayt Stadium, defending champions Qatar secured their spot in the AFC Asian Cup Round of 16 by defeating Tajikistan 1-0 on Wednesday. Akram Afif, who previously netted a brace against Lebanon, scored the crucial goal in the 17th minute, delighting the home fans with a brilliant assist from striker Almoez Ali.
This victory also guarantees Qatar the top position in Group A, as China settled for their second consecutive goalless draw against Lebanon at Al Thumama Stadium earlier on Wednesday. Despite Tajikistan's resilient performance and numerous scoring opportunities, they faced a setback when Amadoni Kamolov received a red card after a VAR check for an incident involving substitute Ahmed Al Ganehi in the 81st minute.
Under the guidance of coach Marquez Lopez, Qatar aims to maintain their flawless record in the upcoming clash against China at Khalifa International Stadium on Monday. Meanwhile, Tajikistan will face Lebanon at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on the same day, hoping to secure a spot in the Round of 16.
