WhatsApp Lets Users Reserve Usernames Early

WhatsApp Lets Users Reserve Usernames Early By neha - June 30, 2026
WhatsApp privacy update

WhatsApp has started rolling out username reservations on Android and iOS. The update lets people claim a preferred handle before the full launch. This move pushes WhatsApp further away from relying solely on phone numbers. Over three billion people use WhatsApp, so demand for good usernames runs high. Reserving early means no one else can take your chosen name later.

Why WhatsApp is adding usernames

Most people hesitate before sharing their phone number with new contacts. Once shared, a number cannot be taken back from someone you barely know. Usernames solve this by replacing your number during first time messages. WhatsApp will still require a phone number for signup and login. Messaging, however, gains a major privacy upgrade through this new system. This shift brings WhatsApp closer to how other messaging apps already operate.

How to reserve your username right now

Update WhatsApp to the latest version on your phone first. Open Settings, tap Account, then select Username from the menu. Type your preferred username if it remains available for use. WhatsApp also suggests usernames if you cannot decide on one. Reservation takes only a few seconds once you reach this screen. Usernames cannot exceed 35 characters and must start with a letter. They also cannot begin with "www." or end with a domain extension.

Claiming your Instagram or Facebook handle on WhatsApp

Many creators want matching usernames across all their social platforms. WhatsApp allows users to claim handles already used on Instagram or Facebook. You must first link your WhatsApp account through Meta's Accounts Center. This step proves you actually own that username elsewhere. Without linking, you cannot reserve a handle someone else holds. Competition exists too, since the same name might exist on both platforms. Acting quickly protects your handle from being claimed by someone else first.

New privacy controls coming with usernames

Once usernames launch fully, new contacts will see your username only. Your phone number stays hidden unless someone already has it saved. WhatsApp also introduces an optional username key for extra protection. Without this key, anyone who knows your username can message you directly. Enabling the key means people need that key too. This matters most for users with widely known public handles. WhatsApp will not offer a search feature or public username directory. People must know your exact username to start a conversation. The full feature rolls out worldwide later this year.
