Umm Salal Becomes 7th City of Qatar to Join UNESCO GNLC

The Minister of Municipality announced that the city of Umm Salal has made it on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).

This is an accomplishment for the joint cooperation of the Ministry of Municipality and Ministry of Education and Higher Education, through its Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, bringing the total number of Qatari cities part of the network to seven, and these are: Al Wakrah, Al Shamal, Al Sheehaniya, Doha, Al Rayyan and Al Daayen.

On this occasion, Director of Umm Salal Municipality Sheikh Abdullah Bin Ahmed Al-Thani said that the citys accession to GNLC is the result of the Municipality's effort in recent years through its sustainability strategy and partnership with civil society institutions, in accordance with the Qatar National Vision 2030, in addition to its success in meeting the membership criteria.

Sheikh Abdullah Bin Ahmed Al-Thani stressed that the State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Municipality is keen on joining the GNLC to promote comprehensive learning within the educational system, achieving sustainable development, and have an exchange with other global cities on best practices.

Director of Umm Salal Municipality said that this achievement is the result of the Ministry of Municipality's cooperation together with a number of relevant ministries and state institutions, to achieve the strategic objectives of the Ministry to raise the residents' quality of life, in accordance with fulfillment of the third National Development Strategy 2024-2030.

He also praised the cooperation between the Ministry of Education and Higher Education's Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science with UNESCO.

In turn, Acting Secretary-General of the Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture, and Science Ali Abdulrazzaq Al Marafi expressed the Committee's pride in Umm Salal joining GNLC, reflecting its vision of enhancing education and learning as an essential tool for achieving the State of Qatar's sustainable development.

Al Marafi explained that this accomplishment is an incentive for the joint cooperation between the public and private sectors, in addition to strengthening international partnerships to achieve sustainable development goals.

The Acting Secretary-General of the Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture, and Science added that Umm Salal, along with the rest of the Qatari cities that have obtained this membership, are considered an integral part of joint efforts to promote innovation and sustainable development in education, and proof of their commitment to achieving educational excellence and building a dynamic knowledge-based society.
