Washington, September 19, 2026 : US President Donald Trump has signed a bill authorizing new sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine.
Legislation Targets Energy, Defense Sectors
Approved by the US Congress this week, the legislation targets Russia's energy and defense sectors, senior individuals and officials, as well as the so-called "shadow fleet" of tankers used by Russia to circumvent Western sanctions.
Bill Grants Authority for Steep Tariffs
The bill gives President Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, as well as on foreign companies and entities that support the Russian military.
House Passed Legislation by Wide Margin
The Republican-led US House of Representatives passed the legislation last Wednesday by a vote of 262 to 159.
Zelenskyy Welcomes Legislation as Path to Peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier welcomed the US legislation, describing it as an extremely powerful tool capable of bringing the war to an end. He added that strong sanctions are essential for peace efforts to succeed, including Ukraine's joint diplomatic efforts alongside the US, Europe, and other friendly countries.
