The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced that at least 74 children were martyred in the first seven days of 2025 due to ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip, including attacks on an unilaterally designated safe zone.
Since Dec. 26, eight infants and newborns have reportedly died from hypothermia, while more than a million Gazan children live in makeshift tents unable to withstand low temperatures, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said.
"UNICEF has long warned that inadequate shelter, lack of access to nutrition and healthcare, the dire sanitary situation, and now the winter weather put the lives of all children in Gaza at risk. Newborns and children with medical conditions are especially vulnerable," said Russell.
According to statistics from the Gaza Ministry of Health, 60,000 pregnant women are at risk due to a lack of healthcare, while 44 children have died due to malnutrition, food shortages, and famine.
The ongoing war in Gaza has resulted in the martyrdom of 238 infants born during the war. Moreover, 853 children under the age of one have been martyred during the aggression.
