The UAE Cabinet has issued a landmark resolution prohibiting children under the age of 15 from creating or accessing personal accounts on social media platforms. The decision, announced this week, comes amid growing concerns about the impact of prolonged digital exposure on young users.
According to a 2024 survey, children in the UAE spend an average of three hours daily on social media. Experts have warned that excessive use at an early age contributes to challenges such as anxiety, attention difficulties, academic struggles, and even speech delays. The Cabinet’s move places the UAE alongside countries such as the UK, Australia, and Malaysia, which have introduced similar restrictions to safeguard children online.
Under the new law, platforms operating in the UAE will have 12 months to progressively implement the standards in coordination with relevant authorities. The resolution outlines clear provisions: children under 15 are barred from opening accounts or accessing full platform features, while those aged 15 to 16 will be granted regulated access under enhanced protective measures.
These safeguards include age‑appropriate content classification, restrictions on high‑risk features such as interaction with unknown users, and usage time limits to prevent overexposure. Platforms must also provide parental control tools, ensuring families can monitor and guide their children’s digital activity.
Officials emphasized that the resolution reflects the UAE’s broader commitment to creating a safe digital environment for young people, balancing innovation with responsibility. By setting clear boundaries, the government aims to protect children from harmful content and interactions while encouraging healthier online habits.
The Cabinet stressed that compliance will be closely monitored, with penalties for platforms failing to meet the new standards. The resolution is expected to reshape the digital landscape for minors in the UAE, reinforcing the country’s role as a regional leader in digital safety and child protection.
