Diplomatic ties between Turkiye and Qatar
Highlighting the robust diplomatic bonds between Turkey and Qatar, H.E. Dr. M. Mustafa Goksu, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, underscored the profound significance of their bilateral relations in global affairs.
Speaking to The Peninsula, Dr. Goksu emphasized the dynamic evolution of their ties and their broader implications beyond national borders.
"Our relationship with Qatar is not just improving; it is growing stronger each day," stated Ambassador Dr. Goksu. Reflecting on the strategic alliance between the two nations, he underscored its global significance.
"The Qatar-Turkey relationship is crucial not only for our respective countries but also for global stakeholders," he remarked.
Ambassador Dr. Goksu also highlighted Qatar's proactive stance and constructive contributions whenever international issues arise. He commended Qatar's influential role in global diplomacy, despite its smaller geographical size. Dr. Goksu further emphasized the unique nature of the Qatar-Turkey relationship, rooted in principles of justice and mutual support.
"In most cases, international relations are based on mutual interests. However, our relationship stands out because it consistently prioritizes upholding rights," noted Dr. Goksu, emphasizing that this principled approach forms the basis of enduring cooperation and solidarity between the two nations.
Ambassador Dr. Goksu made these remarks during a media event at the Turkish embassy in Doha, held on the 8th anniversary of the July 15 failed coup attempt in Turkey. Images from the coup attempt were displayed during the event.
Highlighting Qatar's solidarity and support following the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, he stated, "We will never forget Qatar's solidarity with our country. Amir H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was the first leader to call President Erdogan and show support. Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani was among the first foreign officials to visit Turkey in the aftermath of the coup attempt."
"In recent years, Turkey has faced numerous challenges, including the coup attempt, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a devastating earthquake. We are grateful to Qatar for its generous assistance to earthquake victims," he added.
Regarding the ongoing Gaza conflict, Ambassador Dr. Goksu highlighted Turkey's close cooperation with regional countries, particularly Qatar, on the issue. He praised Qatar's mediation efforts and emphasized joint efforts on the 'Early Recovery Plan' for Gaza.
"We are preparing for the day after a ceasefire, focusing on technical plans to assist in Gaza's reconstruction," he explained, noting Turkey's expertise in infrastructure development.
Ambassador Dr. Goksu expressed confidence in achieving a ceasefire and reiterated Turkey's commitment to supporting Gaza's recovery efforts alongside Qatar and other international partners.
