What the Coccyx (Monkey Bone) Does

•    Supports sitting posture
•    Helps anchor pelvic muscles and ligaments
•    Plays a role in balance and movement

Even though humans don’t have tails, the coccyx is still an important structural part of the body.

Best Advice for Coccyx Health

•    Avoid prolonged sitting on hard surfaces. Hard chairs increase pressure on the coccyx and can cause pain.
•    Use a coccyx cushion. A U-shaped or donut cushion reduces pressure and helps posture.
•    Maintain good posture. Sit with your back straight and hips slightly forward to reduce strain.
•    Strengthen core and pelvic muscles. Exercises like bridges, planks, and gentle yoga improve support around the coccyx.
•    Avoid falls or direct impact. Trauma is the most common cause of coccyx pain.
•    Apply heat or ice if sore. Heat relaxes muscles; ice reduces inflammation.
•    Keep a healthy weight. Excess weight increases pressure on the tailbone when sitting.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical advice if you experience:

•    Persistent pain for more than 2–3 weeks
•    Pain after a fall or injury
•    Difficulty sitting or standing
•    Numbness or radiating pain

A doctor may recommend X-rays, physiotherapy, or targeted treatment.

 Bonus Tip

Gentle stretching of the lower back and hips can significantly reduce coccyx pressure.
