Director of Stadium 974 at Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) Eng. Mohamed Al Atwaan said that the stadium, which is one of the eight stadiums that would host FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, earned a five-star rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) to underscore the strenuous efforts made by the SC in carrying out the sustainable World Cup projects, noting that the state of Qatar achieved what it had promised and adhered to the stringent suitability standards and consolidated them in the entire stages of construction of the eight stadiums.

"We are pleased with this great achievement that crowns the efforts of everyone who contributed to the construction of this wonderful stadium, and we look forward with enthusiasm to welcoming fans from all over the world next November in a unique World Cup stadium that will be host World Cup matches in the group stage and the round of 16," said Eng. Mohamed Al Atwaan in his remarks to Qatar News Agency (QNA).

He added that the design of Stadium 974 with an interim structure through utilizing maritime shipping containers was indubitably an innovation for new standards in constructing sustainable stadiums that host mega events and sporting activities, pointing out that what happened today is added to the series of the successes of this unique stadium, noting the importance of this design in the legacy stage after the curtain fell on the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as it is planned to entirely dismantle the stadium to reutilize the containers in developing sports and non-sports projects in Qatar and worldwide as a stadium that complies with the specifications of the International Football Association (FIFA) and as a design to be dismantled after the World Cup tournament, indicating that all eight stadiums for the tournament are distinguished by their designs and locations.

He stressed that the stadium was inaugurated on Nov. 30, 2021, with the capacity of 40,000 fans, primarily reflected the sustainability & legacy concepts which are considered a major part of planning and hosting in world cup tournaments after a semi-industrial site operated by QatarEnergy was converted into a vital site that hosts a sports facility that will host World Cup matches. He added that the stadium can also be dismantled to be used for other purposes after the tournament, pointing out that the beneficiary country will be identified after finalizing the studies with FIFA, and the infrastructure of this stadium will be left for any future development process, stressing that FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be one of the most sustainable and green tournaments because it observed the sustainability requirements in the entire project construction phases starting from the design until construction stage and ultimately project delivery and operation.

In his closing remarks to (QNA) Director of Stadium 974 at SC emphasized that the state of Qatar has enforced the latest standards for the comfort of fans in the Mondial stadiums, including Stadium 974 which was among the groundbreaking ideas undertaken by SC, including the creation of the idea of the interim stadium and the adherence to the promises that were offered, indicating that there was a great challenge in using maritime shipping containers to construct the stadium, confirming that the stadium would be a model for the upcoming editions of world cup tournament.

Stadium 974 establishes new standards in the construction and reuse of sustainable facilities, as it is the first stadium that can be completely dismantled and reused for other purposes after the end of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and this is reflected in the preparation of a flexible design that allows the stadium to be reconstructed with the same capacity in another location, or to build other smaller facilities, using the same materials, since a study on the environmental impact of Stadium 974 was published earlier this year.

The stadium, which can accommodate more than 40,000 fans, is a milestone in the design and construction of sustainable stadiums, as it was built using certified shipping containers and recycled steel building units, reducing the amount of waste generated from the manufacture of components used in construction, in addition to reducing of waste on the job site.

The use of prefabricated construction components has reduced the time required to complete the stadium, and the use of highly efficient systems has resulted in a saving of %40 of pure water during the construction of the stadium, compared to traditional stadium construction projects.

Stadium 974 is located on the coast of the Arabian Gulf, near HIA, and features a charming view of the West Bay area of Doha across the Gulf waters. It hosted its first official match on its soil on November 30 during the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup Qatar, and is set to host seven matches in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, starting with the match between Mexico and Poland on November 22, for the benefit of Group C.
