Fast EV Charging Network

Qatar is rapidly increasing the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to promote the use of green vehicles and achieve its ambitious goal of reducing the carbon footprint for sustainability.

The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) recently installed a fast EV charging station at the Shura Council headquarters, boasting a capacity of 150 kilowatts and the ability to charge two vehicles simultaneously in under 15 minutes. With this new addition, the total number of Kahramaa-operated EV charging stations has surpassed 200, with an ambitious target of reaching 1,000 stations by 2030.

In cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Shura Council, Kahramaa inaugurated the new EV station as part of its efforts to promote sustainable development and support the adoption of clean technology, according to a statement on the X platform.

This new charging station will facilitate advanced charging solutions for Shura Council employees and other electric car users, supporting the country’s environmental sustainability initiatives.

Muhammad Al Sharshani, Head of the Electric Vehicle Charging Unit at Kahramaa, highlighted the organization's key role, through the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), in providing the necessary infrastructure for EV charging stations. Over the past two years, Kahramaa, in collaboration with its partners, has made significant progress in establishing EV charging stations across Qatar.

The installation of these charging stations is part of Kahramaa's strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and enhance environmental sustainability. Each EV charge saves approximately 7 tonnes of emissions compared to a traditional car. This initiative aligns with the economic and environmental sustainability goals outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030.

Fast charging stations are being installed in various locations, including government buildings, malls, hotels, Woqod stations, and public and private parking areas. The rollout of these stations is a collaborative effort with the Steering Committee of the National Strategy for Charging Stations for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Qatar. This committee includes members from the Ministry of Transport, General Directorate of Traffic, Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Kahramaa, and other entities, aiming to develop policies and infrastructure for electric vehicles.

The Ministry of Transport is currently working with relevant bodies to study and establish the standards and specifications for electric vehicles (EVs). This includes defining and approving minimum technical specifications and safety standards, as well as establishing a center for inspecting and verifying EV specifications and issuing the necessary approval certificates.
