The expected local production of vegetables in Qatar will cross some 120,000 tonnes by the end of 2026 with self sufficiency levels to exceed 70 percent per portion during certain times of the year, according to a report.

The report also noted an upward trajectory of domestic agriculture, with local vegetable production increasing from about 66 thousand tonnes to over 113 thousand tonnes in recent seasons.

Rates of self-sufficiency have improved in a number of products too. Like date production, which has hit an estimated 86 percent self-sufficiency but can increase to 95 percent if all agricultural plans come together.

With extensive public and private sector investment in the sector and an increasing reliance on modern farming technologies, Qatar’s agriculture industry continues to trend towards greater self-sufficiency. The sector has achieved an average annual growth rate of about 5.5 percent.

And it currently is a model for sustainable agriculture in one of the most difficult environments, with water scarcity, high temperatures and soil salinity. This progress is particularly pronounced where fresh vegetables are concerned.

One of the key factors behind such growth is the increase in sophisticated agriculture techniques, particularly greenhouse farming. They provide an enclosure that shields crops from extreme climate and ensures adequate light exposure, allowing for continuous year-round production.

There are also novel methods like hydroponics and vertical farming that are making their way into the mainstream, increasing yields while slashing water usage.

Just as the greenhouse farming industry, for instance, growth is projected at approximately 11 percent, with its market size expected to pull nearly $200 million worth by 2026, from about$170 million in 2024.

National marketing programs and initiatives have also been key players in solidifying the market presence of locally grown products. Enhanced competitiveness and improved product quality have increased consumer confidence in local produce.

Agriculture continues to be one of the key pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 which aims towards enhancing self-sufficiency and domestic agricultural production.
