Qatar's Abusharib makes a Strong Impression in his Olympic Debut

Qatari shooter Saeed Abusharib wrapped up his participation at the Paris 2024 Olympics by securing 23rd place in his first appearance at the Games. Competing in the men's trap event, Abusharib achieved a total score of 118 across five rounds at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, with individual scores of 24, 22, 24, 25, and 23 targets.

Despite the tough competition, the 40-year-old was pleased with his debut performance and expressed optimism about his future, stating that he aims to reach the finals in upcoming events and is already focused on improving for future competitions.

Among the Arab competitors, Morocco's Idriss Al Haffari narrowly missed qualifying for the final, hitting 122 targets but falling short after a tiebreaker. Kuwait's Khaled Al Mudhaf placed 17th with a score of 120, while Oman's Saeed Al Khatri finished 30th with 114 targets.

Making his Olympic debut, Great Britain's Nathan Hales scored 123 out of 125 in the qualifiers, advancing to the final where he secured the gold medal by setting a new Olympic record with 48 hits out of 50. China's Qi Ying earned the silver with 44 hits, and Guatemala's Jean Pierre Brol Cardenas took bronze with 35.

Qatari shooter Rashid Saleh Al Athba, who qualified for the Olympics after winning a bronze medal at the 2022 World Skeet Championships, will compete in the skeet shooting qualifiers on August 2.

Meanwhile, Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary-General Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, along with other QOC officials, attended a reception hosted by Saudi Arabia in Paris during the Games.

Additionally, the number of athletes testing positive for COVID-19 at the Paris 2024 Athletes Village continues to rise. Australian swimmer Lani Pallister, who was considered a medal contender, tested positive and withdrew from the women's 1500m freestyle event, joining British swimmer Adam Peaty as the second COVID-19 case among Olympians this week.
