Qatar records a Trauma mortality rate of around 2 percent, which is significantly low
Qatar has achieved a notably low trauma mortality rate compared to global standards. Professor Ruben Peralta, Deputy Trauma Medical Director at Hamad Medical Corporation, attributes this success to the country's superior level of care, advanced services, and technology. Qatar records a mortality rate of approximately 2 percent, a figure significantly below the international average.
The Hamad Trauma Center ensures round-the-clock availability of dedicated surgeons, physicians, and specialized clinical staff in trauma, acute care surgery, and critical care medicine.
"We have a well-established, well-staffed, and well-equipped state-of-the-art facility. Annually, we treat about 5,000 patients, with 2,000-3,000 classified as trauma cases. Among them, 35-40% are victims of severe road traffic injuries, while around 20% suffer from severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI) requiring ICU care," Professor Peralta recently stated in a media interview.
He also credited the Hamad Injury Prevention Program for the significant reduction in mortality rates due to Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs). Previously, the mortality rate was 26 to 30 percent per 100,000 inhabitants, but it has now decreased to 5-7 percent.
Recently reaccredited by Accreditation Canada International, Qatar's trauma system provides life-saving treatment through the Ambulance Service, Trauma Center, and rehabilitation teams' efforts to enhance patients' recovery.
Patients entering the trauma system undergo immediate and urgent assessment. The HMC Trauma Center has held Qatar's national Level I trauma center designation since 2007, adhering to the highest international standards for trauma care. It includes all major subspecialties onsite, ensuring comprehensive care for major injuries.
"The center provides immediate medical, critical, and surgical care to all citizens who sustain major injuries. The clinical staff are experts in trauma management and specially trained to handle severe and life-threatening injuries 24/7," said Professor Peralta.
In addition to delivering immediate care, the Trauma Section coordinates multidisciplinary teams from various specialties to ensure optimal trauma care and ongoing medical and emotional support for each patient.
The trauma system encompasses quality improvement programs, continuing education and research, a clinical research unit, support for families and communities, the Hamad Injury Prevention Program, and the Qatar trauma registry.
