Qatar To Construct Two Additional Solar Power Plants With A Combined Capacity Of 880 MW

According to an official, Qatar will soon have two additional solar power plants that can produce 880 megawatts (MW), within the next 2 years. This is part of Qatar’s plan for transitioning to clean energy.

Mohamad Al Harami, from KSPP of QatarEnergy, said that “Al Kharsaah Solar PV Power Plant (KSPP) represents a qualitative leap towards diversifying sources of electricity production in the country.”

Recently, he stated that KSPP was the first solar power station in Qatar. He will soon be followed by a Mesaieed power plant with a capacity of 410 MW, and a Ras Laffan power plant with a maximum of 470 MW.

Al Harami stated that the two projects will bring added value to Qatar’s renewable energy sector. Al Harami said that KSPP was very important because it has the ability to produce solar power and provide a network of renewable energy for the national electricity grid. Prior to the creation of KSPP Qatar was completely dependent on steam- and gas-powered turbines for electricity production.

Al Harami stated that KSPP was not only efficient in energy but also reduced the manpower required to run it. Al Harami stated that KSPP’s main control room, which is equipped with the most recent equipment and algorithm, is being managed by a handful of engineers and assistants. The Sun rises at 6:30 AM, and the solar panels of KSPP begin production immediately after sunrise. They reach their highest production in less than two hours.

The total capacity of KSPP is 800 megawatts. It is the largest and most powerful solar power plant in the region. It was built in Al Kharsaah on an area of 10 kilometers.

Sun-tracking technology is used to track the sun’s movement to optimize land use and maximize daily production. The plant has more than 1,800,000. To improve the efficiency of the plant’s production, the plant uses robotic arms and treated water to clean its solar panels at night.

QatarEnergy’s revised Sustainability Strategy calls for the construction of KSPP. This is to reaffirm QatarEnergy’s commitment as a major energy producer to responsible energy production to support the energy transition.
