Qatar Summons Iranian Deputy Ambassador Over Qatari Tanker Attack Near Hormuz

The State of Qatar

The State of Qatar has formally condemned the targeting of its LNG tanker Al Rekayyat near the Strait of Hormuz, describing the incident as a grave violation of international law and a direct threat to global energy security.

In a strongly worded protest note, delivered by HE Ibrahim bin Yousef Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iran’s Deputy Ambassador to Doha, Mohsen Mohammad Qanei, was summoned to the Ministry headquarters. The memorandum conveyed Qatar’s categorical rejection of the attack, stressing that it undermines the safety of international navigation and destabilizes regional security.

Qatar’s statement emphasized that the assault on Al Rekayyat represents not only a threat to maritime safety but also an explicit breach of international conventions guaranteeing freedom of navigation and the protection of global energy routes. The memorandum demanded that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately cease practices that endanger shipping lanes and regional stability.

The Foreign Ministry further affirmed that Qatar reserves the right to take all measures deemed necessary under international law to safeguard its national interests, energy infrastructure, and maritime capabilities. Officials underscored that the targeting of the tanker constitutes an unacceptable escalation, warning that such actions jeopardize both regional peace and the global economy.

In addition to calling for urgent clarification from Tehran, the protest note urged Iran to adopt immediate measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents and to fully comply with international legal obligations. Qatar reiterated its stance that protecting freedom of navigation is a collective responsibility and that violations of this principle will not be tolerated.

The diplomatic move highlights Doha’s firm position in defending its sovereignty and energy assets amid rising tensions in the Gulf. By summoning the Iranian envoy and delivering a formal protest, Qatar signaled its determination to hold Iran accountable while reinforcing its commitment to international law and maritime security.
