The Philippine Embassy in Doha, led by Ambassador Mardomel Celo D. Melicor, is among the diplomatic missions in Qatar's capital extending condolences following the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir of Qatar, who died Sunday, July 12, at the age of 74. Qatar's Amiri Diwan announced four days of national mourning beginning that day, with flags flown at half-mast nationwide and government work suspended until July 19.
Wave of Diplomatic Tributes in Doha
According to The Peninsula Qatar, the passing of the Father Amir prompted an outpouring of condolences from embassies and ambassadors accredited to the State of Qatar, reflecting what the outlet described as the profound respect Sheikh Hamad commanded across the international community. Missions, including the embassies of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Türkiye, and Palestine, each issued statements paying tribute to his leadership and expressing solidarity with Qatar's current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the Qatari people during the mourning period.
Ambassador Melicor, a career Filipino diplomat who arrived in Doha in January 2025 and presented his credentials to Sheikh Tamim later that month, has previously issued formal messages on behalf of the Philippine government marking occasions such as Qatar National Day and Eid al-Adha, reflecting the embassy's routine practice of publicly commemorating significant moments in Qatar's national life.
A Relationship Built on Decades of Ties
The Philippines and Qatar have maintained formal diplomatic relations for more than four decades, with a large Filipino community residing and working in Qatar underpinning much of the bilateral relationship. Ambassador Melicor, a native of Cagayan de Oro with prior postings in Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Germany, Libya, and Poland, previously served as the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs' Assistant Secretary for Middle East and African Affairs before his appointment to Doha.
Part of a Global Outpouring
The Philippine mission's tribute joins codolences issued by heads of a state and governemnt worldwide, including Pakistan, Egypt, India, the UAE, Lebanon, Malaysia, Italy, Canada, and Bangladesh, among many others. Qatar's prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, described Sheikh Hamad's legacy as one that "will forever remain alive in the hearts of both citizens and residents," while Sheikh Tamim is receiving condolences from visiting heads of state, dignitaries, and citizens at Lusail Palace through July 15.
Sheikh Hamad's Legacy
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until his voluntary abdication in 2013, transforming the country from a small, resource-limited emirate into a major global energy exporter and diplomatic power. His rule saw the 1996 launch of Al Jazeera, the establishment of the Qatar Investment Authority, and Qatar's successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, alongside significant investment in the welfare of foreign workers and communities living in the country, a legacy diplomatic missions like the Philippine Embassy have continued to reference in their tributes this week.
