OpenAI ChatGPT Suffers Global Outage, Image Generation Disrupted

OpenAI’s flagship AI chatbot ChatGPT experienced a widespread service disruption on Tuesday evening, 07 July 2026,  leaving hundreds of users across multiple regions unable to access key features. The outage, tracked by monitoring platform Downdetector, triggered a surge in complaints, particularly over failures in image generation.

Reports began surfacing in the latter half of the day, with users noting repeated error messages and unusually long processing times whenever they attempted to generate AI images. Several also highlighted difficulties retrieving older conversations and accessing advanced tools, though text‑based interactions continued to function for many.

On its official status dashboard, OpenAI confirmed that multiple services were affected, citing “elevated error rates” impacting ChatGPT and related products such as Codex, Custom GPTs, workspace analytics, and conversation search. The company acknowledged the disruption and said investigations were underway.

In a statement posted online, OpenAI noted: “Core functionality has been restored but we are aware of known and ongoing issues in FedRAMP workspaces with Codex, workspace analytics, conversation search, searching for custom GPTs, ChatGPT user invites, and the Compliance Logs Platform download endpoint. We are working to resolve these issues and will share further updates as more information becomes available.”

The outage underscores the growing reliance on ChatGPT, which has become one of the world’s most widely used AI platforms for writing, coding, image generation, and research. Even brief disruptions can ripple across industries, affecting students, developers, businesses, and content creators who depend on the tool for daily tasks.
