HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani inaugurated Monday "A Sneak Peek at Qatar Auto Museum Project" exhibition at the National Museum of Qatar.

HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani said that the car culture has always received a great interest in the State of Qatar, starting from sporting events such as Formula 1 to classic car shows.

"We are pleased to present this exhibition which reflects our passion for cars, during a year when a large number of visitors are expected to come to Doha to celebrate the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022," Her Excellency said.

HE Sheikha Al Mayassa said the exhibition presents a new and exciting cultural institution that provides an inspiring educational and technological experience for all, and supports the efforts made by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Public Health to spread a culture of traffic safety and security.

Her Excellency added Qatar Auto Museum will also serve as an innovative community center for car enthusiasts, students, car owners, engineers, and everyone else who appreciates the impact that cars have had on the world.

For her part, HE Chairperson of Qatar Auto Museum Dr. Hessa Al Jaber said: "There are not many innovations in modern history that have had a strong impact on our daily lives and culture as cars did," noting that Qatar Auto Museum will be home to a unique collection of cars, and like all other museums affiliated to Qatar Museums, will spark innovation, creativity, dialogue and participation, and will offer its visitors new and interesting experiences every time they come to it.

Qatar Auto Museum, designed by OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), will be built along the Lusail Express Way between the 5/6 Park and Katara Cultural Village. The museum will offer 40,000 square meters of permanent galleries tracking the evolution of the automobile from its invention through today and how it has influenced culture in Qatar. In addition to providing temporary exhibition spaces for the display of high-profile vehicles, the museum will include a classic car restoration center and areas dedicated to childrens activities, such as driving simulators, mini car mechanics, and more.

In statements to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Acting Director of Qatar Auto Museum Dr. Al Kindi Al Jawabra said that the new museum will include showrooms that show the evolution of automobiles from their invention to the present day, the impact of automobiles on the culture in Qatar, as well as temporary exhibition spaces for large vehicles, including fast-powered cars, limited-edition cars, racing cars and classic cars.

He added that other facilities will include a traffic safety center, a center for maintenance and restoration of classic cars, an educational entertainment center and workshop spaces that will be developed in cooperation with the College of Engineering at Qatar University, Texas A&M University in Qatar, and Qatar Mobility Innovations Center; in addition to spaces designated for kids activities like driving simulators, mini car mechanics, kids car driving zones and many more.

Dr. Al Jawabra explained that the project began in December 2020, when HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani formed the Museums advisory board which helped developing this project. He indicated that focusing on the educational and scientific process is of great importance, as the car and its design are among the biggest innovations that have affected human culture. The car goes beyond being a means of transportation, it is a piece that combines design, technology and everything related to modernity.

He pointed to plans to organize an exhibition in October in cooperation with members of the advisory board and all cars lovers in Qatar to celebrate the World Cup Qatar 2022.

Speaking yesterday at the 2022 Doha Forum, HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani announced the development of three major new museums: Art Mill, Lusail Museum, and Qatar Auto Museum.

The announcement was made as part of a wide-ranging address by Her Excellency to the Doha Forum on the strategy for investing in the creative economy to drive the next phase of development of Qatar.

Introducing the Doha Forum panel discussion, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa said, "I am here today not only as a contributor to developing Qatar's cultural institutions but as someone who is dedicated to helping my country realize its ambitious National Vision, so we can build the Qatar we want for our children and our citizens. Over the past 15 years, Qatar has made significant public investment in the infrastructure of vibrant cultural and creative networks, as an important strategic factor for economic development." The Doha Forum is a global platform for dialogue where policy leaders discuss the critical challenges facing the world and build innovative and action-driven networks to address them. The creative economy panel centered on the new institutions that will join Qatars cultural ecosystem in the coming years.

The Art Mill, built at the site of the historic Flour Mill in Doha, is being designed by ELEMENTAL, with landscapes by Swiss designer Gunther Vogt. The Art Mill campus will bring together exhibition and performance galleries for modern and contemporary art, dedicated spaces for learning and artist residency programs, production facilities, a village for Qatari creative industries, the Dhow Centre, and gardens.

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, Lusail will become home to the worlds most extensive collection of Orientalist paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, rare texts, and applied arts. Celebrating four millennia of cultural exchange between East and West, Lusail explores the influence of the Middle East and wider Islamic world in the arts and will include more than 52,000 square meters of galleries, an auditorium, library, dedicated learning spaces, and more among its four floors.

The new museums will add to the renowned institutions that Qatar has opened since 2008 the Museum of Islamic Art, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Qatar as well as the new 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum that will be inaugurated this week. Currently in development is Dadu, Childrens Museum of Qatar: the only institution of its kind in the region, where children can learn and grow through play, exploration, and experimentation in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
