Netherlands Appoint Xavi Hernández as Head Coach Until 2030 World Cup

The Royal Dutch Football Association confirmed the appointment on Wednesday, ending its search for a successor to Ronald Koeman. Xavi, 46, returns to management for the first time since leaving Barcelona in 2024.

The Spaniard described the role as a tremendous honour and said his football education at Barcelona, shaped by the ideas of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, had given him a special connection to Dutch football.

Xavi said the Netherlands’ tradition of attacking, possession-based football strongly appealed to him. While winning would remain the central objective, he added that he wanted the team to play with creativity, passion and conviction in a style supporters could enjoy.

A new era after Koeman

Xavi replaces Koeman, who stepped down after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup. His agreement runs for four years and places him in charge through the next global tournament in 2030.

The appointment also makes Xavi the first foreign coach to lead the Dutch men’s national team since Austria’s Ernst Happel, whose tenure ended after the 1978 World Cup.
Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had been linked with the vacancy, but discussions did not progress beyond an initial approach as he indicated a preference to remain in club football.

From Barcelona icon to international coach

Xavi arrives with an outstanding playing career and significant coaching experience. The former midfielder made 767 appearances for Barcelona and became one of the defining figures of the club’s possession-based era.

At international level, he helped Spain win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012. His ability to control matches through passing and movement made him one of the most influential midfielders of his generation.

He began his managerial career with Qatar’s Al Sadd, winning domestic honours before returning to Barcelona as head coach in November 2021. Xavi guided the Catalan club to the 2022–23 La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup before departing in 2024.

Dutch identity at the heart of the project

The connection between Barcelona and Dutch football is central to Xavi’s appointment. Cruyff carried the principles associated with the Dutch school to Barcelona as a player and coach, leaving a tactical and cultural legacy that shaped the club’s academy.

Xavi said he viewed himself as “a bit of a son of Dutch football” because of those influences. His task will be to translate that shared philosophy into results while developing a squad capable of competing for major honours.

The new coach is expected to begin preparations immediately as the Netherlands look towards their next international fixtures and the qualification campaigns that will define the road to 2030.
